2016 Course Guides
A suite of Course Guides to spark curiosity.
Since 2014, we have been working with Monash University to define and articulate their brand value through design.
With so many talented and passionate people within the various Monash Faculties and Departments, the 2016 Course Guide project presented the challenge to maintain consistency, whilst capturing the unique story and spirit of each Faculty.
After the success of the 2015 course guides we designed for Monash University, we collaborated again to design the full suite of 2016 guides. Our brief was to de velop a distinctive visual style that captured the energy and ambition of the Monash brand. The undergraduate course guides were the first application of this brand, designed to grab the attention of high school students both in Australia and internationally.
In a bold move away from the photographic covers and layouts that course guides traditionally use, we developed a distinct illustration style that carried through the course guides and onto the covers. Working with the theme of curiosity, discovery and possibilities, each cover features a single illustration, with a question and the line, “it’s more than you think.” Each illustration is explained by a story that shows the diverse and sometimes surprising directions that study in a certain area can take your career.
In total, the 2016 project spanned 332 spreads, 16 covers and 10 Monash departments, over a time frame of 5 months - needless to say it was an incredible project with fantastic clients.
Our collaboration with Monash Strategy, Brand and Marketing Services was key to the success of this project, ensuring that the new visual direction for Monash is consistent not only throughout the course guides, but university communications as well. Blueboat has worked on a number of different projects for Monash since the course guides, adapting and applying the new design direction to publications and animated films.
