Meet the Team

Fiona Smith
Lead Designer
Role: To collaborate, create and lead brilliant brand experiences; fuelled by a desire for the unique balance of beauty and strategy smarts
What is the unique skill or quality that you bring to Blueboat?
I'm equally interested in design and strategy, and I guess that's quite unusual – usually designers would rather get a great brief and focus on creating the visuals, and strategists would rather stick to working on the words and ideas – I really like being able to do both!
How and where did you learn this skill?
I've been working in design studios for eight years, but the strategy side of things was something that really took my interest when I was doing my Master’s in Communication Design, a few years back.
Which piece of work has been the highlight of your career so far, either before or at Blueboat?
Oh, big question! A few years ago I worked on Brisbane City Council's consultation for their 20 year plan. It took the form of a 20 minute documentary, voicing the hopes and dreams of young people for the future of their city. Working with a group of young people to undertake the research and create the footage, then editing and art directing the final doco, was my ideal way to work – I loved every minute, and when the client saw the final edit, he was so moved, he cried!
What string would you like to add to your bow in 2013?
I'm mad about information design, so I’d like to be a part of more projects that involve data visualisation or wayfinding.
What excites you when you are not at work?
I love riding my bike around town, finding new places to eat and drink, hearing new music, coming across surprising parties or events, and seeking out art, wherever it may be. My new passion is fencing – I’ve driven everyone in the studio mad, raving about how much fun I'm having.
